Emley AFC’s championship-winning season ended in disappointment as they lost 3-0 in the JCP Construction League Cup Final.

The Pewits were denied a league and cup double by Parkgate from the division below who had ended the season in invincible form securing their own league and cup double.

In a game played at Scunthorpe United’s Attis Arena, Parkgate’s more recent match fitness told with Emley only having two cup games since their league season ended on April 9.

Brandon Whitfield put the Steelmen ahead just before half-time when he surged forward and unleashed a shot from distance which had Dec Lambton beaten.

Emley chased an equaliser with Charlie Barks and James Walshaw both heading over. In between Ruben Jerome was denied his 40th goal of the season with a clearance from almost under the bar.

Emley tired in the last 20 minutes and Parkgate doubled the lead when Cian Guest headed home from a corner in the 71st minute.

With eight minutes remaining Guest sealed Emley’s fate slotting under Lambton to make it 3-0.

Emley’s season included amazing cup runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase but a league and cup double proved elusive at the end of a long campaign.
