The Slaithwaite Striders will run non-stop over Easter – from 7pm Thursday April 2 to 7pm on Sunday April 5 – to raise money for two great causes.
The runners take on hourly slots, keeping the baton moving around the clock and through the village, no matter the time or weather.
The participants run a fixed loop through the village, on the hour, every hour. Some runners take on numerous slots during the challenge.
Anyone who wants to support this endurance and community feat, can donate. Any money raised will go to the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team and Slaithwaite Cricket and Bowls Club, two important community organisations.
The club’s founder, Andy Smith, said: “Unlike a race, our challenge isn’t about times or getting to the finish line first, it’s about keeping the baton moving for as long as possible. It’s demanding with a few hills and the requirement to keep moving for the hour.
“Some of the runners will be doing the early morning slots, which require an extra level of commitment and endurance, but we often get a few people coming to cheer them on.
“We hope the local area gets behind us and donates – whatever they can give, whether it’s one pound or one hundred – it makes a difference.”

The relay is now in its fourth year – starting in 2023. This year’s run also includes a litter pick and group walk, which anyone can join, and a few group runs – including the grand finale which should see dozens of runners completing the loop during the last hour.
Steven Cook, who’s behind the logistics, said: “From the organisers, to the runners, to the people holding buckets, we’re all doing it in our own time because we want to support our community.
“There are all levels of ability at the club and so the pace will vary but the commitment will stay the same.
“This event isn’t just about stamina, it’s about how sport can unite people and support a community cause.
“We’d love to see as many people as possible joining the litter pick, on Sunday April 5 at 11am or the walk, on Saturday April 4 at 11am, so head to the Carr Lane car park to get involved.”

The event has supported a number of local causes in the past, including Slaithwaite Food Bank and the #FORRONAN charity, which helps young people and was set up in memory of Huddersfield Giants Academy player Ronan Costello.
It’s raised between £1,000 and £3,000 per event.
