Serendipity Creative Writers opens new arts hub in Huddersfield town centre

A creative writers charity is moving into new premises in Huddersfield town centre – and it’s about so much more than just words.

Serendipity Creative Writers helps people with mental health challenges across Kirklees and now has a new base in Market Place, Huddersfield – the former Reeds Rains estate agents – which will become a creative arts hub.

Serendipity founder Sonia Zoref (pictured above with volunteer Martyn Haymonds) said: “The hub will allow us to provide a safe space to help even more people who are living with mental health challenges, as well as running the Huddersfield Creative Writers group and other partnership projects.

“Our vision is to a create a space where members are able to display their artwork, deliver upcycling workshops and have a clothes swap.’’

The hub will allow the strong community partnerships that Serendipity has with other voluntary and community partnerships to grow, including the Vibe singing group.

Serendipity member and trustee Gemma Blagbrough said: “Serendipity came into my life at a point where there was a lot of change and uncertainty. I had lost my identity and was unsure of my next steps.

“As well as encouraging a love of writing to help me through those tricky times, Serendipity has given me a sense of acceptance and belonging.

“The new premises are part of Serendipity’s drive to focus on creativity and community. This will be a space for all in our lovely diverse town to write, draw, paint, potter and natter.’’

Serendipity Arts Hub will be officially launched at its new premises on Saturday, September 12, between 4pm and 6pm.

It will then be fully open from Monday, September 14, with the first session being an evening creative writers’ workshop from 6pm.
