Scapegoat Hill Scarecrow Festival has a movie theme for 2026 and you don’t have to live in the village

A village scarecrow festival is back for its third year after taking the art of scarecrow making to a whole new level in the previous two.

Scapegoat Hill above Golcar staged its first festival in 2024 on the theme of Disney films and the result was so spectacularly successful it staged another last year on the theme of books.

After delighting the crowds who flocked to the event last year with more than 40 scarecrows – many are full-on scenes rather than just scarecrows – organisers have revealed the festival will return this Easter on the theme of movies.

The event will run across the Easter Weekend from Friday, April 3 to Monday, April 6 and people are urged to sign up now to pledge to make a scarecrow.

One of the organisers, Lucy Bailey, said: “We’re inviting everyone to get involved and make a scarecrow. You don’t need to live in the village to take part – we have plenty of space on the hill for entries.

“If local businesses would like to create a scarecrow they’re welcome to display their business name alongside it as we love supporting and promoting local businesses.

“This year’s theme is movies and we already have some fantastic entries lined up with a huge range from children’s favourites to adult classics and we’d love to see even more creative ideas.

“Let’s make this year as amazing as our previous two.”

The 2025 festival included scarecrow depictions of Harry Potter, the BFG, Postman Pat, Little Red Riding Hood, Peter Rabbit, Mr Men, The Gruffalo, James And The Giant Peach, The Smeds and the Smooze, Fantastic Mr Fox and several Marvel characters.

Money raised from event will go to towards new equipment for Scapegoat Hill Junior and Infant School with money from the previous two festivals helping to pay for a new adventure playground in the school grounds.

The deadline to pledge to make a scarecrow is Friday, February 13, as the organisers then need to plot where the scarecrows will be and print leaflets so visitors to the village will know where to find each scarecrow during the festival.

Any businesses that want to be involved providing entertainment, food, games or rides should also contact the organisers.
