Perform HQ could be Huddersfield’s first ever fitness competition centre where people can train and test themselves

Thousands of people from Huddersfield take part in fitness competitions across the UK … and the town will soon have its first fitness competition centre.

It’s called Perform HQ and is being set up at Upper Mills (below) in Slaithwaite by Northern Fitness Gym which also aims to use it as a base for local fitness competitions for adults and juniors.

Linthwaite-based Northern Fitness Gym is now affiliated to large, well-known organisations that run fitness competitions, including Hyrox which organises competitions worldwide in vast venues such as arenas so thousands of people can take part.

Northern Fitness Gym is also affiliated to Deka and Metrix and aims to be affiliated to Athx, Deadly Dozen and Tryka by the time Perform HQ opens in the summer.

These ‘big six’ organisations host huge fitness competitions which usually involve running and doing fitness challenges such as rowing, sandbag lunges and sled pulls.

A team (pictured at the top of the story) from Northern Fitness Gym competed in the Hyrox Istanbul event with gym member Ruth Woodcock (centre holding the flag) one of the winners at the event.

The Slaithwaite set-up will be far smaller but will use exactly the same equipment as in the major competitions which makes it an ideal training base for people who take part in these events.

Kev, who has done 18 competitions himself over the last two years both in the UK and overseas, said: “There are more than 100 people from Northern Fitness Gym who regularly take part in these competitions and thousands across Huddersfield. Some go to compete while others simply go to complete.

“It can be difficult for them to train for these events in their own gym, especially with members doing their own usual training there, so Perform HQ will be a dedicated space.

“Everything is calibrated with exact timings for runs so the athletes can do their simulated training at Perform HQ, perhaps with their own personal trainers, and then go back to their gyms to work on aspects of the competition where they feel they could improve.’’

Perform HQ will be set up in a 500sq metre ground floor unit at Upper Mills next to Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Empire Brewery.

Kev should get the keys by the end of May and it will then take most of June and possibly into July to transform it into the fitness performance hub.

Kev added: “We are affiliating to the big 6 fitness competition organisations as they are a clear mark of quality with thousands of followers so people know that when they are doing simulated competitions here they are training for the real thing.’’
