Major works on TransPennine Route Upgrade means more disruption around Christmas

People travelling between Huddersfield and Leeds will need to use rail replacement buses in the final two days before Christmas.

Major revamp work is being done at Mirfield Railway Station from Tuesday December 23 throughout Christmas, closing the line between Huddersfield and Leeds.

This means rail replacement bus services will be running between Huddersfield and Dewsbury, Leeds and Wakefield Kirkgate.

The railway is completely shut on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and services will finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve.

Two new platforms are being built at Mirfield designed for longer trains and the station will re-open on Saturday December 27.

The TransPennine Route Upgrade team will also be realigning track through the station to support faster, more frequent services and installing new signalling equipment to boost reliability across the route.

Following this series of upgrades, further engineering work will be carried out as teams install drainage in the car park at Mirfield and permanent lighting on the approach to it.

There will also be work to Station Road beneath the railway bridge. Throughout this period, Platform 3 will remain in use alongside the new Platforms 1 and 2.

Passengers are urged to check before they travel at nationalrail.co.uk or their train operator’s website.

In Huddersfield, progress continues on the full rebuild of Deighton station which remains closed.

Teams will demolish Whitacre Street overbridge on Christmas Day and Boxing Day so it can be replaced with a taller, wider structure. This will make room for new track alignment and overhead line equipment.

Joe Munro, TRU customer lead at Northern, said: “Mirfield station has already seen significant changes since the TRU programme started work on the station in 2024.

“This upcoming Christmas period will see a major milestone as part of the project as the rebuilt island platforms will be completed.

“To deliver these works, on Tuesday December 23 and Wednesday December 24 no trains will be able to run through Mirfield station with amended timetables in place and rail replacement buses in operation between Dewsbury and Halifax/Huddersfield to connect into rail services.

“We’ve worked closely with TransPennine Express to keep customers moving. Northern will be strengthening our services with more carriages between Leeds and Manchester Victoria via Bradford Interchange and TransPennine Express will provide further capacity by serving some local stations on the Calder Valley route between Manchester Victoria and Brighouse.”

Meanwhile, the Weaving Lane Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Dewsbury is relocating across the yard as Network Rail acquire the current site to accommodate works on the TransPennine Route Upgrade.

The move is funded by Network Rail who need access to the railway line which operates between Dewsbury and Ravensthorpe as they build a new retaining wall and create space for new tracks.

The recycling centre will close on Sunday November 30 with containers and facilities being transported to the other side of the site overnight. It will re-open at the new location on Monday December 1.

Residents can access the new site via the same route along Thornhill Road and Weaving Lane but rather than turning right at the entrance gates it will be a left turn.

Operating hours recently changed to winter times with all Kirklees Household Waste and Recycling centres open from 8am until 4pm.
