Machete and hunting knife among 20 weapons dropped into town centre knife surrender bin

More than 20 dangerous blades – including a machete and a hunting knife – have been taken off the streets of Huddersfield.

The weapons have all been surrendered in just over four weeks since the installation of a secure knife disposal bin in Byram Street in Huddersfield town centre.

The bin was organised by Huddersfield BID and paid for through the BID levy.

Installation of the bin is part of Huddersfield BID’s work with Kirklees Police, Kirklees Council and other partners to make the town safer and reduce the fear of crime.

Over winter officers from Huddersfield Proactive Town Centre Team have been carrying out extra patrols with Huddersfield Bus Station one of the priority areas for attention.

Police say knife crime continues to decline in Kirklees with overall knife crime 11% lower in January 2026 than in January 2025.

Supt Warren Pittman, of Kirklees Police, said: “Reducing knife crime continues to be a key priority for both the police and our communities who quite rightly want to feel safer and see offence levels drop.

“Policing operations to target those involved in knife offending continue and we also continue to work closely with partners including Kirklees Council, Huddersfield BID and the Violence Reduction Partnership on initiatives to discourage people from carrying weapons.

“The installation of a knife bin has been another very positive step, and we are pleased to see it has been well used and resulted in the safe disposal of weapons we would much rather were not on the streets.

“Positively, knife crime in Kirklees has continued to fall and we remain committed to reducing it further.”
