It’s a tradition that’s been running for more than 150 years … and it’s back again this year.
Longwood Sing will be on Sunday, September 14 at St Mark’s Church on St Mark’s Road in Longwood at 2.30pm.
The ever-popular event is usually held in a natural amphitheatre next to Nab End Tower at Longwood but the amphitheatre needs improvement work so can’t be used this year.
This is the 152nd sing and will feature music from Golcar Band which will then accompanying the singers … and anyone can go along and join in. The songs range from hymns to modern music.
Over the years crowds have gathered at Nab End Tower for a programme of music and songs, raising money for charities and good causes.
In the run-up to this year’s sing there will be a community clean-up on Sunday, September 7 from 12noon to 3pm with people cleaning routes between the church and tower and weeding the amphitheatre.
This has been organised by Abigail Garner, landlady of the Dusty Miller in Longwood.
She said: “It’s a shame we can’t hold the sing in its natural home at the amphitheatre but the steps are in poor condition and it needs new railings and handrails.
“We are holding the clean-up to hopefully get people talking about the amphitheatre and think about using it again.
“We are aiming for the improvement work to be done over the coming 12 months so the sing can be held at the amphitheatre next year.”
To volunteer to help repair the amphitheatre or to take part in the clean-up call 07990 883932 or just show up at The Dusty Miller at 12pm on the day.
