Laurence Sorhaindo fires Emley AFC into play-off final – and it’s on home turf at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground

Laurence Sorhaindo’s early goal avenged Emley AFC’s play-off defeat of last season and put them one match away from promotion to the NPL Premier Division.

Emley beat Dunston 1-0 at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Tuesday night to set up a home play-off final clash with rivals Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday (May 2).

The Pewits were knocked out of the play-offs by a stoppage time heartbreaker against Dunston 12 months ago but revenge was sweet as Sorhaindo’s strike ensured a first play-off victory for Emley in 10 years – and the first time ever they’ve hosted a play-off final on their own turf.

Emley went into the play-offs out of form but have bounced back when it mattered and are now unbeaten in three matches for the first time since February.

It was a cagey opening but nerves were settled just 18 minutes in when Gabriel Johnson’s shot was saved but the rebound fell nicely for Sorhaindo to finish it off for his third goal in two games.

Emley thought they had doubled their lead when a towering Niall Heaton corner was bundled in by Johnson but the offside flag curtailed Emley celebrations.

Dunstan missed a glorious chance to equalise five minutes before half-time when the Emley goal was left gaping but David Robinson hit the post when it was easier to score.

In the second half Dunston tested Emley’s resolve but the home side withheld the pressure.

Johnson had another chance for Emley but dragged his shot wide.

Emley continued to defy the visitors and it was a nervous finish with seven minutes of stoppage time but the Pewits held out to set up the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground’s biggest game in almost three decades.

The attendance of 909 was Emley’s biggest crowd for 27 years.
