Joe Heyes hits 33 points but West Yorkshire Hawks Men go down to second successive defeat

West Yorkshire Hawks Men lost for the second successive game, going down 103-87 at the high-scoring Derby Trailblazers.

A 32-point first quarter from the hosts set the tone, leaving the Hawks with a 14-point deficit to chase.

A spirited second-quarter comeback saw the gap reduced to just five by half-time, thanks in large part to Joe Heyes, who finished with a game-high 33 points.

However, Derby came out of the break with renewed energy, locking down defensively and restoring their double-digit lead in the third.

Despite solid contributions from Charles Olusunmade and Chris Sibbett (11 points each), the Hawks couldn’t close the gap.

Head coach Danny Byrne said: “It is frustrating to once again see us not locked in from the opening tip. It has, again, cost us dearly. There are too many good teams in this division to only play hard for three of the four quarters.”

The Hawks Men return to action on January 10 when they host Stockport Falcons at the Hawks Nest.

It was also a challenging weekend for the Women’s team who were beaten 55-72 by Oaklands Wolves at the University of Huddersfield’s Hawks Nest.

The visitors stormed ahead with a 23-6 opening period, forcing the Hawks to play catch-up the rest of the way.

The Neon and Navy rallied impressively, outscoring the Wolves in the second quarter and remaining competitive throughout the second half.

Sonia Maria Matei led all scorers with 28 points, while Luna Jade Gommersall Buckley added 18 in a strong offensive display.

Player-coach Millie Oates said: “Today is super frustrating. If it wasn’t for that slow start, we could have really pushed hard.

“The biggest lesson this season is that at this level you have to deliver a complete 40 minutes of basketball to come away with wins.”

The result leaves the Women’s side determined to come back stronger when they tip off 2026 with a road trip to Trafford Mystics in early January.
