Into the Spotlight, sponsored by Huddersfield-based Scriba PR, is a weekly feature which highlights some great businesses. This week we feature award-winning Denby Dale-based eye care specialists The Body Doctor.

A family-run business celebrating its 10th anniversary this year has won its second Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The Body Doctor, based in Denby Dale, was founded by Sue Grant in 2012 and she was joined in the business by her two sons Adam and Sam.

The company specialises in eye health and offers innovative solutions and treatments for common eye problems such as dry eye disease.

The company won its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2016 and last week it was awarded its second in the Innovation category for its Sterileyes product, an anti-bacterial compound which is featured on the company’s hot eye compresses, used in the treatment of dry eye disease, MGD and blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids.

The prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise, announced each year on April 21, the Queen’s birthday, is an awards programme for British businesses and other organisations which excel at international trade, innovation, sustainable development or opportunity.

Jessica Smith, marketing executive for The Body Doctor, said: “The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious award a business can win and it’s a huge achievement for us to win it twice.

“We pride ourselves on working collaboratively and passionately to create innovative products that improve people’s eye health.

“Sterileyes is ground-breaking anti-bacterial technology which reduces bacteria on our eye compresses by up to 99.9%. This makes patients’ treatment safer, more effective and prolongs the use of our products.

“Incorporating Sterileyes on our fabrics sets us apart from competition within the eyecare market and we are the first company to offer this patented technology on our products. We are constantly looking for new products and never stand still.”

At the start of the pandemic The Body Doctor launched its high-quality AB Mask, a re-usable anti-bacterial face mask with filters.

Sales of the masks boosted turnover as did demand for its eyedrops as people needed eyecare after spending more time looking at computer screens and other devices during lockdown.

Other popular products sold by The Body Doctor include ThinOptics reading glasses, described as “the world’s thinnest, lightest and most portable reading glasses” which fold into a keyring or a credit card-sized case, and an anti-fog cloth for lenses which prevents glasses from steaming up – and even works on bathroom mirrors!

A 128% boost in turnover in 2020-21 also earned another award for The Body Doctor. The company won the Ward Hadaway Fastest 50 Award for the Fastest Growing Small Business in Yorkshire, another impressive accolade in its anniversary year.

The Body Doctor has units in Denby Dale and Clayton West. TV medical expert Dr Hilary Jones has been eye health ambassador for the company for the last six years.
