How Golcar Guides are celebrating their 100th anniversary

Golcar guides are celebrating their 100th anniversary this autumn with a major exhibition at Colne Valley Museum.

The 19th Golcar Guides have met at St John’s Church in Golcar ever since they were formed in 1925 by their legendary founder and leader Miss Irene North.

The exhibition is on until Sunday, October 19 and features photos of past guides, examples of guide uniforms and badges through the decades and information about Miss North.

On Saturday, October 18 there will be a celebration coffee morning for previous guides, leaders and volunteers from 10am to 12 noon at St John’s Church.

A centenary service will be held at the church on Sunday, October 12 combined with the harvest festival.

Miss North is pictured below in the 1920s and at the top of the story with Golcar Guide leaders Margaret Thompson (left) and Jane Garside who became Chief Guide of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Current Golcar Guides leader Lucy Crosland said: “Miss North must have been an exceptional individual to have the foresight and vision to set up a uniformed organisation for girls in 1925, at the young age of 22.

“She was a formidable character and heavily invested her life to developing and supporting 19th Golcar Guides.

“The impact of Miss North on young people’s lives must have been significant as her great niece recalls her as being a ‘force to be reckoned with, fiercely independent.’

“Within her life she travelled overseas to visit friends in America which would have been seen as exceptional for a single woman of this time, considering Miss North was born in 1903 and at that time transport was either by steam, horse and cart or ‘shank’s pony’.
