Honley edge out Holmbridge to become Huddersfield District League champions after tightest title race in years

The battle for the Huddersfield District League Premier Division title was finally won after one of the tightest races in years.

Honley in second place needed to beat Diggle at home to win the title for the first time in over 100 years. Anything less and the title would go to Holmbridge.

Both sides started brightly on a lovely sunny day with the football flowing from end to end.

Honley opened the scoring with a goal from Matty Stor. Diggle went straight up to the other end and equalised with a goal from Sam Bagshaw.

The pitch was rock-hard and made it difficult to keep the ball on the ground. Players were finding the going hard on their feet.

Honley were creating plenty of chances, but the Diggle keeper was having an outstanding game.

Honley went close following a counterattack and a series of corner kicks. The pressure was beginning to take its toll and Honley went ahead with a goal from Jay Smith.

Honley kept the pressure on Diggle and kept them pinned back deep in their own half as they sought to increase their lead.

Diggle occasionally got up the field only to see the ball being sent straight back down towards their area.

From one of these balls came Honley’s third as Ben Lindley smashed the ball home.

Honley kept a tight grip for the rest of the game to end up 3-1 winners and Premier Division Champions for 2025/26.
