Golcar United hope to follow up their Club of the Year Award at the weekend with another major step forward.

The Weavers won Club of the Year at the West Riding County FA Grassroots Football Awards 2026 on Friday night.

And today (Tuesday) the club hopes for more good news as they bid to take control of their stadium site from Kirklees Council.

Uniquely, the football club is run by a charitable organisation, known as the Golcar United Community Playing Fields Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

The CIO has leased the recreation ground in Longfield Avenue since 2019 but has now applied to Kirklees Council to take over ownership under a Community Asset Transfer.

The club, which has more than 400 youth players, over 120 adult players and around 500 volunteers, has invested more than £250,000 in its Skye Direct Stadium site over the last six years.

Now the CIO wants to take on a 125-year lease under the Community Asset Transfer. A long leasehold will give the club security and help satisfy grant funding requirements.

It will also ensure the recreation area and sports pitches remain available to the local community for the long-term.

In total the site extends to five acres and hosts all kinds of community events from an annual music festival called Party on the Pitch to a bonfire and firework display.

The site also has a community meeting space and hosts health and fitness classes, drama and dance classes and meetings for the local Neighbourhood Watch.

The application goes to a meeting of the council’s Cabinet with councillors set to delegate the final decision to service director for property John Stebbings.

The lease will include a covenant to restrict use of the site to community use but will also allow some commercial use “if this is considered necessary for a successful business model.”

Golcar United won the Club of the Year award for its community work which includes an outreach programme which last year saw it provide talks on vital life skills to more than 1,000 pupils across several schools.

The club also recently renovated a community play park on its land which now has new swings, picnic tables, fencing and a wood-chip surface.

Golcar United director and trustee Chris Worsley said: “This award isn’t about football, individuals or leaders. It isn’t just for the football club.

“This award is for everyone and everything associated with Golcar United and our wider community.

“We can’t mention everyone as the list is endless but each and every one has played a significant part in the foundations of the club and remain part of the fabric that makes us who we are today.

“It’s onwards and upwards with some amazing things coming down the line to further support and assist our community on every level.”
