Ash and Gav Connor are remaining in charge at Golcar United and will go into their 10th year as joint managers.

Ash Connor is excited for the new season and says work is well underway to get the squad ready for the new campaign.

Golcar recovered from a rocky start to finish ninth in their first season in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and pre-season training starts in late June.

Connor has had a holiday and said: “I’ve enjoyed the break, to be honest, as things can be full on. I think it is important to get away and have a rest.

“Having said that once the season is over you’re straight into trying to retain players and then sign new ones. This can also be a stressful time too so in reality it never stops!

“We are hoping to retain as many players as possible. We may lose a couple for different reasons but that’s football.  Obviously we are doing all we can to retain the players we have and improve the squad with new additions.”

On a decade at the club, Connor added: “We’ve been at this club 10 years now. It feels like a long time but it has passed quickly. Both me and Gav are proud of what we have achieved here. Hopefully we can make our 10th season a special one and one to remember.”

The club has already made two new signings. The first being Ollie Russon (above, with Gav Connor) who has arrived from Goole. Russon, 22, is a midfielder who has previously played for Halifax Town, Frickley Athletic, Silsden, Glossop North End, Barnoldswick & Albion Sports.

The second is a player returning to the club in Oliver Willitts (below), who played in the Huddersfield & District League last season. Willitts played a crucial part in the 2021-22 promotion side and Connor says he’s delighted to welcome him back.

He said: “Oliver is a player we know well and I’m delighted he’s decided to re-join us. He played an important part in getting us promoted and so we are glad to have him back.

“Ollie is a player we have looked at and tried to sign earlier in the season, however he stayed at Goole which shows he is a loyal player.

“He decided he wanted to join us at the end of the season and we are excited to see him pull on a Golcar shirt.”

The club has started to organise a few pre-season friendlies with the Weavers travelling to Gigg Lane to face Bury FC on July 22.

Huddersfield Hub can reveal that there may also be a friendly between Golcar and Huddersfield Town once again.

Connor said of pre-season: “We’ll get the lads in at the end of June and start to prepare for the season ahead.

“Pre-season is always important and I’m looking forward to seeing all the lads come back into the club after this small break.”
