All five floors at one of the Huddersfield’s most imposing mills have been fully renovated and are now ready for more businesses to move in.

The aim is that The Globe mill complex in Slaithwaite will become one of the north’s leading landmarks filled with innovative and medical-orientated businesses along with part of it becoming a food and drink hub.

Part of the imposing mill has already been let to businesses and it’s fast becoming a centre for medical enterprises with the hope that a dentist, optician, physiotherapist and holistic services will also move in.

But it also has an Artisan Hall set up with ideal spaces for specialist food, drink and other local businesses with room for large restaurant and bar operators. Independent shops may fancy smaller spaces at ground level right next to Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

The mill is so large there is also space for offices too. The mill has undergone a £5m transformation in a partnership between developers the Hartley Property Trust Ltd and Kirklees Council.

Businesses already in the mill include doctors’ surgery Colne Valley Group Practice and a pharmacy while pharmaceutical and healthcare company Thornton & Ross relocated its headquarters from its manufacturing works in nearby Linthwaite to The Globe.

Others that have moved in during 2023 include Innovate Orthopaedics which design products used by surgeons, office equipment specialists Euro Digital Systems, pharmaceuticals and healthcare consultants Integrated Life Science Group, electricity energy network specialists Blake Clough Consulting and technology and data science business, Frame.

The mill also has an Innovation Centre featuring incubator office and laboratory space along with business support and mentoring so is ideal for businesses just starting out.

Hartley Property Trust spokesman Chris Smith said: “These buildings are an important part of our regional heritage and our investment has delivered new, highly efficient and modern workspaces with the important carbon benefits of repurposing buildings.

“Voted the best place to live in the north and north east by the Sunday Times, Slaithwaite is on the rise and The Globe delivers state of the art premises that are walkable or easily commutable with direct rail access to Leeds, Manchester and beyond.”

The redevelopment has included a new pedestrian bridge over the canal basin linking to Carr Street which is the main retail area and high street in Slaithwaite.
