A care home in Denby Dale has an in-house gardener – a green-fingered resident called Doreen aged 102!
Residents and staff at The Denby know that their garden is well looked after as Doreen worked in a nursery for many years – and she even continues to lend a hand at her daughter’s garden centre whenever she visits.
Staff at the home say Doreen’s enthusiasm and work ethic are an inspiration to everyone around her.
Recently, she helped turn over the vegetable patch ready for planting season and shared her expert advice on growing forget-me-nots after seeds were kindly donated by another resident’s family member.
The seeds have now been carefully planted in pots to germinate before being transferred into their permanent flowerbeds, all under Doreen’s guidance.
Penny Duncan from the home said: “Doreen is an inspiration to many. Her energy, positivity and willingness to help are incredible. She loves being outdoors and sharing her gardening knowledge with everyone.”
Doreen modestly added: “Well, I just see what needs doing and if I can, I’ll do it.”
