Former Huddersfield Town stars helped raise thousands of pounds for ex-servicemen’s charities.

Match 4 Heroes 4 was held at Golcar United’s Skye Direct Stadium and featured two matches – Huddersfield Town Legends v Golcar Legends and Army Veterans v Supporting Charities.

The Town Legends side was managed by former Town boss Peter Jackson and former commercial director Sean Jarvis.

Players included Efe Sodje, Phil Starbuck, Matt Glennon, Joe Skarz, Rodney Rowe and Sam Collins along with former Yorkshire cricketers Andrew Gale and Ryan Sidebottom.

For the record the Army Veterans beat the Supporting Charities team 4-2 and the Golcar Legends defeated the Town Legends 2-1.

More than 700 people passed through the gates during the day and organiser Jonathan Horsman hailed the event a big success. It’s expected the event will raise around £10,000.

The annual event is held in memory of Meltham soldier Tom Wroe and colleague Sgt Gareth Thursby who were killed on duty in Afghanistan in 2012.

As well as the football there were lots of stalls and a fun fair to make it a real family fun day out.

Jonathan said: “It was a great day with a great atmosphere and it was brilliant to see the village of Golcar once again come out and support our cause.

“We have raised money for two amazing charities: Help for Homeless Veterans and Armed Forces Bikers who both help veterans and families of veterans.

“We’ll know exactly how much we’ve raised in a few weeks’ time. We had 18 sponsors for the event all paying £100 to have their logo on the shirt with the overall event sponsor Bond Brickwork Ltd being our main 19th sponsor.

“All the sponsors deserve a huge thanks and we really appreciate them getting behind the event. A huge thanks has to go to all the organisers, players and supporters. Without any of these people we wouldn’t be able to put the event on.”
