Free guided wellbeing walks explore health benefits and hidden places on University of Huddersfield campus

The University of Huddersfield is hosting a series of free guided wellbeing walks around the campus this weekend.

Each walk lasts around 75 minutes and is limited to just 15 people. The walks include university herb gardens, the canal towpath and a trip to the rooftop of the new Daphne Steele Building on the National Health Innovation Campus.

The walks are part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2025, which offer the public a chance to discover how campus green and blue spaces support health and wellbeing.

The Wellbeing Walks: Accessing Health through Campus Green and Blue Spaces take place on Saturday October 18 (10.30am-11.45am and 1pm-2:15pm) and Sunday October 19 (10.30am-11.45am), starting from the university’s Queensgate campus.

Led by Dr Dillon Newton, Research Fellow in the School of Human and Health Sciences, the walks will highlight spaces including lawns, orchards, herb gardens, allotments, the canal towpath and the indoor green wall and rooftop at the Daphne Steele Building.

At each stop, Dr Newton will share insights from UK-wide research into how access to green and blue spaces can improve wellbeing and reduce health inequalities.

Dr Newton said: “These walks are a chance to step away from screens and busy routines and to experience the health benefits of nature right here in Huddersfield.

“We’ll connect everyday spaces to national research on wellbeing and inequalities and invite people to share their own reflections along the way.

“The walks are open to all but are especially aimed at working-age adults from the region who may be balancing stressful or demanding jobs. Students and staff from the university are also welcome.”

Booking: The walks are free to attend but advance booking is suggested via Eventbrite.
