Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will be a speaker at an event in Huddersfield to launch what’s described as a “new political force.”

The People’s Alliance for Change and Equality (PACE) is holding a Conference of Resistance, a “major public event launching a long-term grassroots movement for justice, democracy and unity in Kirklees and beyond.”

The conference will be held at Huddersfield Mission in Lord Street, Huddersfield, on Saturday May 10 (2pm-5pm).

PACE is a newly-formed group of campaigners, trade unionists, independents and activists who want to see an end to the cost-of-living crisis, militarism, inequality and oppression.

A spokesman said: “As Reform UK makes alarming gains across England’s councils, it’s clear that a serious, community-led alternative is urgently needed.

“PACE stands firmly against racism, austerity and hate – and for a future built on equality, solidarity and decent public services.

“This is not just a one-day event. This is the start of a new political force – led by and for working-class people, across all communities.

“It will include those fighting to save local dementia homes, sports centres and to bring an end to the Gaza conflict.

“Many of the community independent councillors will also be offering their support, alongside trade unionists and young people fighting gender oppression.”

Other speakers include: Dewsbury and Batley Independent MP Iqbal Mohamed; Jamie Driscoll, former North of Tyne Mayor and leader of Majority; Claudia Webbe, former Independent MP for Leicester East; Salma Yaqoob, former leader of the Respect Party and Stop the War; Alan Gibbons, leader of Liverpool Community Independent Party; Linsay Taylor, CEO, Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND); and Abubakr Nanabwa, of The Muslim Vote.
