Elvis will be in the building – the Newsome Centre that is – to help raise money for the Mayor’s charity

Elvis is to join in the fundraising for the official charity of the Mayor of Kirklees.

New mayor Clr Karen Allison chose Huddersfield-based Uniform Exchange as her charity for the year and the first of several fundraising events has now been announced.

It will star Yorkshire Elvis Dave Leadbeater at the Newsome Centre (formerly Newsome Parish Church) on Saturday, November 14. He will be supported by up and coming singer Evie Jane.

Dave, who lives in Huddersfield, has been a backing musician and singer for some of the top Elvis Presley tribute bands in the world which led him to become an Elvis himself.

“Over the years I’ve got to know all the Elvis songs backwards so eventually I thought I may as well be Elvis myself so here I am, Yorkshire’s Elvis,’’ he said.

“Elvis recorded 786 songs between 1953 and when he died at the age of just 42 in 1977. That’s a phenomenal amount. I can now do more than seven hours of his songs so there’s plenty to go at.”

Dave’s ‘day job’ is also music. He and wife Kim go under the stage names Dave and Kim Valentine to do music therapy shows which are ideal for care and veterans’ homes and for adults with learning disabilities.

Clr Allison said: “I’m thrilled Dave has agreed to do our first big fundraising concert and we are busy lining up other great events right through until next May.

“Uniform Exchange is a fantastic charity that’s helping thousands of families across Kirklees so please come and support these mayoral fundraising events which will be great entertainment and fun.’’

Uniform Exchange has been running since 2011 and has been a charity since 2018. It’s based in Lockwood and provides free school uniform for families across Kirklees which is badly needed as several areas in Kirklees are classed in the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods in England with many others falling into the 20% most deprived.

In 2021 the charity helped 3,500 children but demand has soared so much that in 2025 Uniform Exchange helped around 13,000 children across Kirklees, saving their families an estimated £1.1m in school uniform costs by giving out around 120,000 items of school uniform.

Its hard-working volunteers won the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2024, the highest honour any voluntary group can achieve and is the equivalent of an MBE.

Doors for the Elvis night on November 14 open at 7pm with Dave’s first performance starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost just £15 and are available via online platform Zeffy as every penny goes to the charity. There will be a bar on the night.
