Countdown begins to demolition of Berry Brow tower blocks as Kirklees Council reveals next steps

Work is about to start on demolishing two empty high-rise blocks of flats in Berry Brow.

Kirklees Council is planning to demolish Bishop’s Court and Holme Park Court and replace them with more modern lower-rise homes.

The council says contractors are about to move in to set up the site for a five-stage process ending in demolition and site clearance.

Hoardings will be erected around the flats but still allow safe access along Parkgate and to the bus stop.

It will be a five-stage project, taking each layer down piece by piece that includes site set up, asbestos surveys and removal, soft strip, demolition and site clearance.

The decision to demolish the flats was made through various consultations with the previous tenants and surrounding residents following fire safety concerns in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London. Tenants have all been moved out.

To keep the wider community informed on the demolition process, the council held a well-attended Community Briefing in early February.

The focus of the event was to offer assurance and give residents the opportunity to ask questions. Almost 100 people attended.

Following the demolition, the future of the site will be decided in the council’s Capital Investment programme’s new build scheme that was submitted to Cabinet in December 2025 and will form a part of the council’s vision to create more homes.

Clr Moses Crook, Cabinet member for housing and transport, said: “It’s great to see we are moving forward with plans to demolish these two outdated blocks.

“This progress is essential for the future of the site and will make way for new housing to help battle the national housing shortage.

“We understand that demolition projects of this size can be a worrying time for those who live locally, but we want to reassure residents that we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum – and keep you informed along the way.”

Kirklees Council will continue to share progress of the demolition project as it develops on their communication channels and with the neighbouring residents.
