Christmas and New Year bin collection dates in Kirklees and opening times for council tips

Kirklees Council has announced bin collection dates over Christmas and New Year.

Bin crews will work as normal until Christmas Eve but then there will be no more bin collections until Monday January 5 2026.

Bin workers in Kirklees traditionally take a break between Christmas and New Year but this year the council hoped to introduce collections over the festive period when households tend to produce more waste.

The council had put more money into the budget to pay for the extra collections however it’s been claimed the unions wouldn’t agree new working practices.

Bin collections won’t re-start on Friday January 2 – a normal working day  – because there are no bin collections in Kirklees on a Friday.

However, there will be extra collections on Friday December 19 for households whose bins were due to be emptied on Christmas Day, which is a Thursday.

The council says that if your last collection was a grey bin, your first January collection will be a green bin. Likewise, if your last collection was a green bin, your first collection of 2026 will be a grey bin.

Households can find out their collection dates on the manage your bins page where they can also download next year’s collection calendar.

As in previous years the council will collect extra bags of general waste and cardboard as follows:

  • You can leave up to three tied bags of general waste next to your grey bin on your first grey bin collection day in January.
  • Flattened cardboard can be left next to your green bin for your first recycling collection.

Extra waste and cardboard will only be collected during these first grey and green collections in January.

Snow go! No return for Christmas bin collections as council can’t reach agreement with trade unions
