Bradley Mills Road: ‘One of Huddersfield’s worst roads set to become one of the best’

A road behind the Accu Stadium is to be closed next week in preparation for major reconstruction work due to take place in Spring.

Bradley Mills Road – dubbed one of the worst roads in Huddersfield – will be closed between Monday February 16 and Friday February 20 to allow for tree felling work.

It’s site preparation work ahead of the start of a full reconstruction which will see part of the banking cut away and the road and pavement widened to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The cliff-edge road had become increasingly dangerous in recent years with pinch points where drivers had to slow right down or stop to pass vehicles coming in the opposite direction.

The road surface had also become so damaged and riddled with potholes that the top half of the road had to be completely resurfaced in April 2025, even though major reconstruction work was planned just a year later.

In total around 150 trees will be removed so that the road can be widened to a minimum of six metres with the pavement widened to at least 1.5 metres.

All the trees lost will be replaced and native wildflowers will also be planted.

The council says the full reconstruction will take place in Spring 2026 and has previously said the road will be completely shut for six months. No date has yet been revealed.

Kirklees Council has allocated a combined £5 million for two projects, Bradley Mills Road and repair work on the A6024 Woodhead Road at Holme Moss which suffered a landslip in 2021.

Dalton Labour councillor Tyler Hawkins, also Cabinet member for highways and waste, said: “When I was first elected in 2022, one message came through loud and clear from residents and even from my own family: ‘Get Bradley Mills Road sorted!’

“For years, there had been stop-start progress, funding promised and then pulled, and very little to show for it, which has been frustrating for everyone, especially those of us who live here.

“I’m very much a ‘believe it when I see it’ person, and over the past year we’ve finally started to see real progress.

“We’ve already had resurfacing on the top section, preparatory works like tree felling are happening, and the full widening is due to take place in the Spring.

“I want to thank residents for their patience. After being one of the worst roads in Huddersfield for far too long, Bradley Mills Road is finally on track to become one of the best.”
