Voters in Kirklees go to the polls on May 7 2026 and the ‘all-out’ elections could see the biggest shake-up in Kirklees Council’s 52-year history.
Labour currently runs Kirklees as the biggest party but doesn’t have an overall majority.
‘All-out’ elections mean all 69 councillors must stand down with three being elected in each of the 23 wards.
The current make-up of the council is: Labour 23; Conservative 16; Independent 12; Liberal Democrat 9; Green 4; Kirklees Community Independents 2; Community Alliance 2; Vacancy: 1.
Nominations have closed for the 2026 elections and a total of 380 candidates will contest the 69 seats.
Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Reform UK are all fielding three candidates in each of the 23 wards.
Voters will have three votes and can choose up to three candidates standing in their ward.
Following a review of ward boundaries by the Boundary Commission, some ward names and boundaries have changed such as Golcar which becomes Colne Valley East and Newsome which becomes Netherton and Newsome.
Some polling stations have also changed as schools are being phased out. All the information voters need is clearly set out on their polling card.
Polling cards confirm:
• Your ward.
• The list of photo ID you can use, if voting in person.
• Your polling station, if voting in person and information on how to apply for an absent vote if you are going to be away.
For those who prefer to vote by post, there is still time to apply. Applications must be received by 5pm on Tuesday April 21 2026. Residents can apply for a postal vote at https://www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote.
Steve Mawson, chief executive and returning officer for Kirklees, said: “There are three important things for Kirklees voters to remember at this election.
“First, every voter has three votes to cast in their ward, as all council seats are being contested following a boundary review.
“Second, if you’re voting in person, you’ll need to bring an accepted form of photo ID to your polling station.
“And third, there is still time to apply for a postal vote if you’re unable to vote in person on May 7. You can find all the information you need on the council’s website or on your polling card.”
Voting will take place on Thursday May 7 (7am-10pm) but votes will not be counted until Friday May 8 from 9am. Twelve wards will be counted in the morning and 11 wards in the afternoon.
The first result is expected shortly after 12 noon with the final result due around 6pm.
Below is a list of candidates in all 23 wards. The nominations can also be found on the Kirklees Council website HERE
