Accountant Carolyn Atkinson has retired after a 40-year career at Sheards in Huddersfield.
Carolyn joined Sheards in July 1985 after completing a Foundation Course in Accountancy at the University of Huddersfield.
In 1990, she became the firm’s first female partner, a milestone moment for Sheards and the wider Huddersfield accountancy community.
Throughout her career, Carolyn has played a key role in shaping the culture of the firm, mentoring countless colleagues, creating a people-focused environment and building long-term client relationships.
Carolyn was also closely involved in guiding the firm through periods of change and growth, including its successful merger with SMH Group in April 2024.
Alongside her fellow directors, she has supported the firm’s commitment to giving back, playing an active role in charity fundraising and community initiatives across the region.

Reflecting on her career, Carolyn said: “It has been a real privilege to spend my career at Sheards, working with such a supportive team and building long-term relationships with our clients.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for the opportunities I have had over the years.”
Kevin Winterburn (above centre), director at SMH Sheards, said: “Carolyn has been a huge part of this firm for more than 40 years.
“Her knowledge, professionalism and calm leadership have made a lasting impact on Sheards and everyone who has worked alongside her.
“She has always put people first, whether that’s clients or colleagues, and that legacy will stay with the firm long after her retirement.”
