Serena Fletcher bagged a brace as Huddersfield Town Women FC beat GB Police Ladies FC 4-0 in a friendly. Brittany Sanderson and Kate Mallin were also on the scoresheet.
This charity exhibition match also saw the return of Huddersfield supporters back to the Stafflex Arena after a 177-day absence. Additionally, Town’s Sarah Danby also featured for the police squad against her own club.
Despite his side being in the off-season following the season conclusion against Brighton last month, manager Jordan Wimpenny was impressed with his players’ attitude
“It was a really solid performance from the team. Every player was excellent,” he said. “I asked some jobs of players that they wouldn’t normally do, and they took to this challenge really well.”
The game started with both teams attempting a shot towards goal to take an early lead however a lapse in concentration in the Police ranks allowed Sanderson to get behind the defensive line to smash home the first goal for the Terriers.
The second half allowed Town to build on their lead with Mallin doubling the scoreline. Town’s No4 collected a loose ball following a corner and smashed the ball into the bottom left of the goal from the edge of the box.
Fletcher, who joined Town a year ago from Championship side Blackburn, made it three when she dribbled past the keeper to slot into an empty net. Her second, and Town’s fourth, was a stunner as she scored from range into the top right corner.
Wimpenny was full of praise for the whole team and said: “When you look at the players, they played with fluidity, they enjoyed themselves, they expressed themselves and they were able to demonstrate what they are good at as individuals.”
Town Women will return to pre-season in three weeks with various fixtures expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
