The Mayor of Kirklees Clr Cahal Burke helped celebrate the great work of volunteers at Salendine Nook Community Centre.
The Mayor and fellow Lindley Liberal Democrat councillor Anthony Smith attended the Macmillan Coffee Afternoon.
In his speech, the Mayor said: “I would like to pass on my thanks to Mr Thomas Beirne and Margaret Beirne for their help today with preparing the community centre gardens.
“Also thank you to Mike for his help decorating the external fixtures, to Cheryl, Sue and Janet for their generous baked donations and finally to Steven Hargreaves and all those who have attended and donated today.
“When I became Mayor, I promised to raise awareness of people, groups and businesses across the borough and raise the profile of what they do because we have so much to be proud of.
“I have visited many groups and charities that go above and beyond in supporting others despite the difficulties and challenges they may have in their own lives.
“So, it is great to see the work that is going on here today to bring people together in the community.
“It resonates with the values we hold here in Kirklees of Pride, Inclusion and Kindness. Thank you all again and I wish you all the best in the future as the work you do is invaluable and makes a real difference to our communities.”
Clr Smith added: “Clr Burke and I have worked closely with Salendine Nook TRA over many years. The group have a fantastic community spirit and it’s always a pleasure for us to support them in whatever way we can.
“This afternoon’s event has brought the community together and raised money for a very worthy cause. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to put this event together, all the residents and guests who attended and The Merrie England who kindly donated cakes.
“We look forward to supporting the group and the community with their future events and work.”
