Business leaders in Huddersfield are working behind the scenes on exciting plans for when the town centre can re-open and welcome people back.
Huddersfield Business Improvement District (BID) wants to put art and culture at the forefront of the recovery.
The organisation wants to commission artworks to celebrate the town and is also seeking street performers ready to entertain shoppers on ‘Super Saturdays’ when lockdown restrictions are eased.
BID has identified several possible buildings and locations for artwork and has a budget to commission innovative pieces which could be anything from street art to murals, lighting installations to textiles.
Applications are being accepted until March 6 with commissions likely to be awarded in late March for installation in mid-summer.
Huddersfield BID is also looking to build the atmosphere in the town centre later in 2021 by bringing in singers, musicians, entertainers and performers. It’s all aimed at putting a smile on people’s faces.
They hope to build on the success of entertainment before Christmas which included Yorkshire elves Ebor ‘n’ Gum and the National Elf Service.
BID manager Matthew Chapman said the two initiatives met two BID aims to “promote a lively Huddersfield” and to make the town centre a “safe and attractive place to be.”
Matthew added: “Creating a vibrant, exciting and welcoming environment through creativity and performance will be key and we cannot wait to build on the successful commissions delivered during the summer and Christmas in 2020.
“We encourage local creatives to contact us to instil that added sense of pride throughout the town centre. We can’t wait to deliver these initiatives to entice people back into Huddersfield when the time is right.”
