Resurgent Golcar United are seeking a third successive league victory for the first time this season as they take on Penistone Church at the Skye Direct Stadium on Saturday (December 10).
The fixture (3.00) gives Ash and Gav Connor’s side the chance to build on back-to-back wins against Thackley and Handsworth, results which have lifted them seven points clear of the bottom two in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
Penistone currently sit in 6th position and haven’t given up hope of securing a promotion spot yet so joint boss Gav Connor knows this game will be a difficult one.
When the sides met in August it was Penistone who won 1-0 with Golcar’s Leon Henry being sent off. The Weavers have a man in form in 14-goal top scorer Kayle Price who has six goals in the last five matches in all competitions.
Connor said: “We are looking forward to the game. It was tight the last time we played them and hopefully we can keep 11 men on the field this time. If we do, we might have a good chance of getting the three points.”
Golcar have found it tough in the higher division this season but Connor said: “We haven’t really been concerned about the league position. The season is long and we know that all the teams in this league are capable of beating each other. However it is nice to creep up the table a bit.
“As we’ve said before the performances have been there, it’s just the results that haven’t gone for us. We know the lads we have are more than capable of getting us much higher up the league and we all believe it will happen.”
Last week’s 1-0 win at Handsworth was achieved through a stoppage time penalty from Price and Connor added: “It was a good win and it’s about time that we had the luck for a change!
“We had a dodgy first half and were thankful to Steady (Golcar keeper Harry Stead) for keeping us in the game at half-time. The second half was more about us and we could have had a couple before the winning penalty which Kayle slotted away.
“I am very pleased for Kayle, he took his penalty well on Saturday. He’s a great lad and we have no doubt his goals will be key to us climbing the table.”
