Joe Skarz believes Golcar United aren’t far away from climbing out of relegation danger in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
The Weavers’ player-coach says the team is learning all the time after promotion and they just have to be more ruthless to ensure the “fine margins” go their way to turn performances into points.
Golcar go to Handsworth FC today (Saturday December 3) seeking back-to-back victories to lift them further clear of the drop zone.
Former Huddersfield Town defender Skarz, whose free-kick proved to be the winner in last week’s 3-2 home win over Thackley, said results would start to come.
“Performance-wise our season has been good, in my opinion,” he said. “We’ve not applied ourselves as we know we can in probably two-and-a half games – Maltby Main at home, Silsden away and Eccleshill at home in the first half.
“Other than those games I feel we’ve been in every game and it’s fine margins in this league whether you get three points or no points. It’s about who takes their chances. Fine margins are key.”
In the last game Golcar went 3-0 up and had a second half scare as Thackley pulled it back to 3-2 but the Weavers showed battling qualities to hold out for a first win in nine league matches.
That vital victory lifted them four points clear of the relegation places and Skarz wants the players to build on that result.
He added: “We have belief in how we go about things and how well we’ve played through the season and we aren’t far off as a group. Togetherness and hard work is the only way to turn things around.
“We have a management who work tirelessly for this football club and if you asked anyone if Golcar would be competing in Step 5 of the football pyramid three years ago they’d have laughed. That’s all down to the management, chairman, club secretary and the volunteers.
“The team just needs to carry on going and having the belief that we are a match for anyone in this league.
“We’ve drawn away at Emley who are second and lost in the last minute to league leaders North Ferriby so we don’t need to change anything drastically. We just need to be a bit more ruthless in both boxes.”
Golcar, meanwhile, have a tasty pre-Christmas derby with Emley at the Skye Direct Stadium on Saturday December 17 (3.00). Put that in your diary!
