Golcar United are still adjusting to life in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and joint boss Ash Connor says it’s easy to forget just how far the club has come in a few short years.
It’s been an up and down start for the newly-promoted club with new players coming in and others having to cope with the demands of a higher league.
Connor said: “We are still adjusting to this division and at the moment it looks like we have found our level. However, that doesn’t mean myself, Gav (Connor), Joe (Skarz) and the lads are content. We do want to be challenging at the top of this division.
“The performances have been good and there have been lots of close games. We know we need to cut mistakes out but in this league the simple matter is that anyone can beat anyone.
“I think people need to remember where we have come from. Less than five years ago we were playing amateur football. Since then we have built the club up to the level we are playing at today.
“Yes, we have been challenging for promotion the last few years and, of course, we want to do that again but there has to be some realism to where we are now too.”
Whilst the league form is up and down the Weavers cemented their place in the NCEL League Cup 3rd round. They beat Hemsworth on Tuesday night with Slater Barnes scoring the only goal.
On the game Connor said: “We have played Hemsworth in two consecutive games each winning one of them 1-0. That just tells you how close this league is. Slater scored a good goal on Tuesday and overall we are really happy to be going through to the next round.”
Next up for Golcar is a home game against Frickley Athletic in the league on Saturday (October 15). Connor is confident his team can turn their league form around, having lost their last two league fixtures.
He said: “We know Frickley will be a tough team. They have some very good players that can hurt us and like we have seen in other games if you make mistakes you can get punished.
“We, on the other hand, have some really good attacking players. Kayle Price now has a few goals and we have been really impressed with Slater so far this season. It’s also good to have Buddy Cox back as he provides us with a different option up front. As always we’ll do all we can to get the three points.”
Golcar kick-off against Frickley at 3pm on Saturday afternoon at the Skye Direct Stadium.
