A “new concept” Wagamama takeaway in Huddersfield town centre has shut down after just three months.

The “delivery kitchen” offered a ‘click and collect’ takeaway service to the public and was a pick-up point for online delivery drivers.

The Wagamama outlet opened in the former Calder Vets unit on the Castlegate Retail Park, off St John’s Road, in April but failed to take off. It was just the third Wagamama kitchen to open in the North of England after Leeds and Preston.

A Wagamama spokesperson said: “The Huddersfield local delivery kitchen closed on July 31. We are hugely disappointed to have made this decision.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of all concerned, it was operating well below predicted sales. The team has done an amazing job and have been offered positions at other nearby restaurants.”

When the company applied for planning permission, consultants said bringing Wagamama to town would provide a boost to the local economy.

They said: “Wagamama is a well-known brand with a good reputation for quality that can attract further investment interest to the town.”

Wagamama, founded in London 30 years ago, specialises in pan-Asian Japanese-inspired food with dishes including noodles, curries and rice bowls.
