Huddersfield-based recruitment agency Stafflex has continued its long running support for the Kirklees College Foundation Breakfast Club initiative for the fourth year running.
The Foundation Breakfast Club was launched in 2016 by the college’s Foundation department as they found that a number of students were turning up to the college without having any breakfast. This directly impacted on their learning as they were unable to concentrate in class because they were so hungry.
Students that are experiencing difficulties can speak with a member of the Foundation Studies team at the college. It is then arranged for them to receive a hot drink and healthy breakfast in the mornings before classes begin at 9am.
The college have also introduced the Xplorer’s Lunch Club this year, in which students are taught how to cook healthy takeaway meals taking inspiration from restaurants like Nando’s, Taco Bell and Jerk Hut.
This initiative allows the students to gain valuable life skills as well as giving them a healthy and nutritional meal which some students also take home to feed their family.

Peter Joseph, education manager at Stafflex, said: “There has been a lot of talk recently on the back of footballer Marcus Rashford’s free school meals campaign and so it’s great that we can contribute towards the on-going efforts to combat child hunger and wellbeing.
“It’s extremely rewarding to see the positive effect the club has had on the foundation students and we’re delighted to be able to support the initiative again this year.”
Jane Brown, key worker at Kirklees College, said: “We are so thankful to Stafflex for providing funds for the breakfast and Xplorer’s clubs. Without the additional funds it would be a struggle to offer the level of provision that we are currently able to do.
“The absence of a nutritious breakfast can impact negatively on a young person’s behaviour, concentration and learning experience so it’s really important that they get a healthy breakfast to start the day in the right way.”
