Communities across Huddersfield are preparing to party to celebrate a moment in history that will never be repeated.

A double Bank Holiday marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – a unique celebration of Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne – and there are events large and small organised right across Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council will mark the occasion by the lighting of the Castle Hill Beacon on Thursday (June 2).

The ceremony will include musical performances from 9.15pm before the beacon lighting at 9.45pm, which will be conducted by the new Mayor of Kirklees Clr Masood Ahmed supported by local Scouts.

Families can enjoy a choice of free fun days taking place at parks across Kirklees on Saturday and Sunday June 4 and 5 including Greenhead Park and Beaumont Park in Huddersfield.

Classical music fans can enjoy a rousing ‘Last night of the Proms’ style concert performed by Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra at Dewsbury Town Hall on Sunday June 5 (5pm) with patriotic classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Shabir Pandor said: “We have a fantastic community spirit in Kirklees and I’m delighted that people across Kirklees can take advantage of the extended bank holiday weekend to come together at one of our free, inclusive and accessible events to celebrate the Queen’s historic jubilee.

“As well as the events, and the lighting of the Castle Hill Beacon, we will be marking this unprecedented anniversary by proudly flying special platinum jubilee flags at all our Town Hall buildings across Kirklees.

“Ahead of the celebrations, I’d like to wish all our residents a happy Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend and hope they come together with family, friends and neighbours to enjoy the festivities on offer.”
